Beard Family Trips & Vacations

Tokyo from March 15 - 24, 2008

Tokyo - March 21:  Disneyland Tokyo

website:  http://www.tokyodisneyresort.co.jp/index_e.html

Address of the location (from the website):   1-1, Maihama, Urayasu-shi, Chiba 279, Japan

We were given this guide and schedule in English:

It turned out that this was "Campus Day" for Disneyland.  Cheap tickets were offered to students and their families, since it was the last week day before school started again, so many of them were here at the park.  Kind of made me wish we had came on the day it was raining.

Entrance to Disneyland Tokyo with the new Disneyland Hotel (opens July 2008) across from the entrance:

We headed into Main Street, U.S.A. with Cinderella's Castle in front of us.  The roof is covered in a framework of glass to protect the area from the weather.  Notice the crowds.

We turned left after getting through Main Street, U.S.A. and entered Adventureland.  We first stopped by Pirates of Caribbean.  Interesting layout inside for the waiting area.  The Disneyland in Anaheim, CA has no real waiting area inside it (short line) and everyone has to wait outside in the sun.  The Magic Kingdom at DisneyWorld has a long waiting area inside a dungeon area.  It does have an overlook area inside it for the Blue Bayou Restaurant as the Anaheim Disneyland does.  The warnings at the start were in Japanese, but the majority of the sound tracks were in English.  The ride was basically the same as the other parks we had been to.  It was too dark inside to get decent pictures.

After the ride, which was similar to the other parks, we stopped by the Boiler Room Bites and purchased a couple of Pork Steamed Buns along with drinks.  The counter person understood our English enough for us to order what we wanted.

The second ride was the Jungle Cruise.  I tend to pass this ride by at DisneyWorld since I have been on it too many times, but we wanted to see how similar it was to the other two parks.  The guide did all his routines in Japanese, but was very energetic in his gestures.  I think that if we could have understood him, we may even have laughed with him at his jokes based on his actions.  The scenes are the same throughout the ride except there is no reference to shrunken heads; instead he is selling fruit.  The boats also have safari pictures hanging in them, which I don't remember from the other parks.

The Western River Railroad was closed for refurbishment.   The crowd in the second picture are in the queue for the Jungle Cruise.

The Enchanted Tiki Room was also closed for refurbishment.  The Polynesian Terrace Restaurant is between it and the Western River Railroad.

One of the things we noticed throughout the park was these popcorn stands selling different types of popcorn.  This one was chocolate, but we saw ones that sold chili, caramel, soda, and many others.  They all had long lines waiting to buy from them.

We passed by the Swiss Family Treehouse:

We then went over into Westernland to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and noticed it had a three hour wait.  We got fastpasses for it and planned to return later in the afternoon.

Here is more of Westernland:

Country Bear Theater was the next stop with a different type of waiting area.  The show itself was similar to those at the U.S. parks, but there was a mixture of English and Japanese songs.

Mark Twain Riverboat Landing

Into Critter Country we go:

Splash Mountain also had a three hour wait, so we didn't stay:

Within the Splash Mountain is Grandma Sara's Kitchen:

New we headed into Fantasyland:

Cinderella's Castle has a couple of towers out front of it that are not part of the U.S.'s castles.

We got fastpasses for the Haunted Mansion also while we went off to look around and ride other things.  This had another three hour wait listed for it.  The tour and ride is similar to the U.S. parks' mansions, though the outside is quite different.  All of the ride and tour was in Japanese.

Peter Pan's Flight was over two hours long, so we didn't wait there.

Snow White's Adventure was next along the way.  Another long wait that we didn't stay for.

The Mickey Mouse Review was one of the shows that we decided we had to see.  Luckily, there was not a long line for our wait.  This is a show that is not in the U.S.A. made up of animatronics that play songs from various Disney movies with the characters singing them in either Japanese or English.  Pictures aren't fantastic, but the show was.

We rode Pinocchio's Daring Journey since it only had a 30 minute wait.  The scenery is similar to the U.S. rides and I believe it was all in Japanese.

Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall had a very long line waiting to eat there, so we didn't even think about it.

We of course had to ride It's A Small World.

Passed by the entrance to Toontown....

and entered Tomorrowland...

Did not ride the Grand Circuit Raceway.

Space Mountain had a three hour wait:

Star Tours also had a long three hour wait:

We decided to see what Micro Adventure was since it only had a 60 minute wait.  It turns out to the Honey, I Shrunk the Audience show.  It is done in Japanese, but the 2nd to the last row has headsets that can be selected to provide English or Chinese versions.  The displays in the pre-show are also in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters also had a very long line.

We saw several parades and shows throughout the day.

Had some snacks at the Mile Long Bar during the afternoon:

That was about all at Disneyland for the day.
