Tokyo - March 17:  Imperial Palace East Gardens

website:   http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3018.html

Address of the location (from the website):   part of the Imperial Palace complex

Upon arriving at the gates to the East Gardens, we found that they were also closed on Mondays.

This is the gates into the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.  Only the East Gardens is open to visitors, unless you sign up for a tour beforehand to see the Imperial Gardens grounds.  The tour is free, but requires registration of each member of the party beforehand so that their security can do a quick background check before allowing anyone on the tour.

Looking from the entrance way, you can see a park area to the right along a pathway that winds around the moat surrounding the Imperial Palace.  Notice the blue tarp on the ledge in the small park.  These are used by companies to reserve an area for their Cherry Blossom Festival party (Hanami) during the blooming of the cherry blossoms.  There are cherry trees all along the path beside the moat.  Each major company will have their junior employees taking turns to sit on the tarp starting about a week before the blossoms are expected.  This is done day and night to keep the best spots for viewing.

This is the blue tarp seen in the picture above.  All the other employees had eaten their sack lunches and went back to work.  There was one young lady sitting off to the side keeping watch on the tarp.

This is another gate into the East Garden about a quarter away around it.  Notice the walls of the moat and the beginning of a security fence at the top of the wall.  There were guards watching all along the top of that wall, which was lined with lights to be used at night.

Along the path, we came across the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo that was also closed on Monday.
